How to Become a Firearms Instructor

As a firearms instructor, your primary responsibility is to teach students how to safely or properly use firearms safely or train personnel or clients on how to safely use certain firearms. In order to obtain employment as a firearm instructor, you must undergo training and/or certification by a certified firearms instructor school. Most states require that you pass state-mandated examinations in order to hold a firearms instructor certificate.
There are many different schools that offer these courses. When choosing which school to attend to receive your certificate, you will want to look for one that offers the most education and training. The school must also be accredited by the National Shooting Association. To take the exam, you must be a resident of the state where the school is located at the time of taking the exam. Your school must have been approved through the Federal Firearms License (FFL) by the federal government. Your school must also follow federal regulations in order to be accepted by the NFA.

Your school will provide information about the requirements you must meet before you can take the test. You will have to complete an evaluation in which you demonstrate your understanding of federal regulations, safety, and proper shooting procedure.
